Nochebuena (Christmas Eve)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\"Nochebuena<\/p>\n

Christmas Eve, celebrated on December 24th, is a huge family affair across Spain. Relatives gather for a festive feast that varies by region but often includes jam\u00f3n (Spanish ham), marisco (seafood), cordero (leg of lamb), pescado (fish), fine wine, and plenty of desserts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In many homes\u2014especially those with children\u2014Nochebuena is an exciting night because it\u2019s when Pap\u00e1 Noel (Santa Claus) arrives with presents. But regional variations keep things fun: in the Basque Country, Olentzero delivers gifts, while families in Catalu\u00f1a and Arag\u00f3n celebrate with the beloved Ti\u00f3 de Nadal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Caga Ti\u00f3 (literally means pooping log!)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\"Caga<\/p>\n

The Caga Ti\u00f3, or Ti\u00f3 de Nadal, is a small wooden log with a sweet smile and a cosy blanket. Sold in Christmas markets in Catalonia and Aragon, this character \u201cpoops\u201d presents for children when encouraged with songs and gentle taps\u2014much to the delight of little spectators experiencing this Spanish holiday custom for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

El Gordo (The Big One!)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Spain\u2019s National Christmas Lottery, known as <\/span>El Gordo, is one of the biggest draws in the world. Taking place on December 22nd, it has been going strong since 1812. The winning numbers are famously sung by schoolchildren, and the release of the annual Christmas lottery advert <\/a>marks the unofficial start of the festive season. Spaniards everywhere relate deeply to the heartwarming stories these ads tell.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nochevieja (New Year’s Eve)<\/span>
\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

On New Year\u2019s Eve, Spaniards gather in homes or local plazas with a bowl of the \u201c12 uvas de la suerte\u201d\u2014the 12 lucky grapes. As the clock strikes midnight, people try to eat one grape per chime, making a wish for each. It\u2019s a fun, chaotic challenge and one of the most iconic family traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belenes (Nativity Scenes)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

Belenes, Spanish nativity scenes, go far beyond the simple stable setup. These elaborate displays can feature entire towns\u2014farms, marketplaces, rivers, and more\u2014turning them into a favourite holiday activity to explore with kids.<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u00eda de los Santos Inocentes (Fool\u2019s day)<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\"ElDecember 28th marks el d\u00eda de los inocentes (<\/em>Holy Innocents\u2019 Day) in Spain. This is Spain\u2019s April Fool\u2019s Day \u2013 pranks or \u2018inocentadas\u2019 take place all over the country, there are spoof reports on Spanish television programmes and there\u2019s even an annual charity event called \u201cGala Inocente, Inocente\u201d.<\/p>\n

Holy Innocents\u2019 Day has biblical origins, and gruesome ones at that.\u00a0The day marks the Massacre of the Innocents as depicted in the New Testament, when Herod ordered the murder of all children in Bethlehem under the age of two, fearing that the newborn Jesus Christ everybody was talking about as the Messiah would replace him as King of Judea.<\/p>\n

Historians aren\u2019t sure about whether this truly happened, but at some point during Medieval times the mourning for this infanticide among Christians turned into celebration.<\/p>\n

Los Reyes Magos<\/span>
\n\"Rosc\u00f3n<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In Spain, it\u2019s the Three Kings\u2014Melchior, Gaspar, and Baltazar\u2014who bring children their gifts on January 6th. Parades and celebrations fill the streets on January 5th, creating magical memories for families and visitors alike. Santa is becoming more common, but the Reyes Magos remain the stars of Spanish holiday customs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosc\u00f3n de Reyes<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\"Rosc\u00f3nThe traditional rosc\u00f3n is a ring-shaped sweet bread, sometimes filled with cream, chocolate, meringue, or custard. Topped with colourful candied fruits that resemble sparkling jewels, it hides tiny figurines inside\u2014so chew carefully!<\/span><\/p>\n
