School Lunches in Spain: What Your Child Will Actually Eat Every Day<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School lunches in Spain are probably not at the top of your list when you’re planning a move to Madrid. They should be. In Spain, children don’t bring packed lunches to school. They sit down every day to a hot, three-course meal \u2014 starter, main, and dessert \u2014 and this is entirely normal. For families arriving from the UK, Ireland, France, or the US, it can come as quite a surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does a Spanish School Lunch Actually Look Like?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The meal follows a clear structure: a starter (often soup, salad, or vegetables), a main course (meat or fish), and dessert (usually fruit or yoghurt), served with bread and water. No fizzy drinks, no chocolate bars, no vending machine run at breaktime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What surprises most families is just how regulated Spanish school menus are. This isn’t canteen food cobbled together from whatever’s cheapest. The Community of Madrid<\/a> publishes nutritional guidelines that schools and catering companies are required to follow. Monthly food group recommendations are specific: vegetables appear 18\u201322 times per month, legumes 6\u20138 times, fish 6\u20139 times, and fruit 14\u201322 times. Processed and pre-cooked foods \u2014 think croquetas, empanadas, battered fish \u2014 are capped at a maximum of four servings per month across the entire menu. Fried food is kept to a minimum; grilled, steamed, and roasted methods are prioritised. Olive oil is standard. Salt is restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portion sizes are also age-adjusted \u2014 a six-year-old and a fourteen-year-old are not getting the same plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Common Misconception: My Child Won’t Eat Any of This<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I hear this a lot. And yes, initially, some children struggle \u2014 particularly if they’re arriving from a country where lunch is a sandwich eaten at a desk. Chickpeas, lentils, and grilled fish are not what most children consider an exciting Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But based on working with 400+ families since 2020, I can tell you: they get used to it. Almost without exception. Children are adaptable, and the social element of the comedor<\/em> \u2014 sitting with friends, taking their time over a meal \u2014 helps enormously. In the early weeks, most schools are happy for children to bring a more substantial morning snack to keep them going, and parents can balance things out with a good merienda<\/em> (afternoon snack) at pick-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the Food Made On-Site?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not always \u2014 and this is worth asking about when you visit schools. Some schools have their own kitchen (cocina propia<\/em>) and prepare everything in-house. Others use external catering companies. Both can work well, but it’s a question every Spanish parent asks, and you should too. School menus are published on school websites, usually at the start of each month, so you can see exactly what’s being served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Allergies and Dietary Requirements?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Schools are legally required to accommodate children with medical dietary needs \u2014 allergies, coeliac disease, diabetes. Catering companies must provide alternatives, and in practice, most schools manage this well. One of my own children is coeliac and has been catered for without issue \u2014 her school uses a specific coloured tray so there’s no possibility of mix-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious dietary requirements (no pork, for example) are also generally respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where it gets more complicated is veganism by choice. If your child follows a vegan diet without a medical basis, do not assume the school will accommodate it \u2014 many won’t, particularly in the public and concertado sectors. I’ve worked with families in this situation and it can be genuinely difficult to resolve. Check this before you shortlist schools, not after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain Is About to Raise the Bar Even Further<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spain already takes school food seriously \u2014 and the government is about to make it even more so. New national legislation currently in progress will tighten comedor<\/em> standards further: processed meals capped at one per month, at least 45% of fruit and vegetables must be seasonal, and a minimum of 5% of the monthly food budget allocated to organic produce. Vending machines in secondary schools will also be restricted \u2014 industrial pastries, sugary drinks, and energy drinks are on the way out. Currently, nearly 70% of secondary school vending machines in Spain fail WHO nutritional criteria. The new legislation addresses that directly. It’s worth comparing this to what’s happening in England right now. A recent report by Bite Back \u2014 the food charity founded by Jamie Oliver \u2014 found that 60% of secondary school pupils in England buy grab-and-go options at least once a week, with pizza slices, sausage rolls, and paninis dominating school canteens. Main meals are being edged out by cheaper, more convenient options, and enforcement of existing food standards is, according to the report, largely non-existent. The Guardian covered this in March 2026<\/a>. Spain and England are, on this particular issue, heading in very different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much Does School Lunch Cost?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Costs vary by school type. In public schools, the current rate is \u20ac5.50 per day \u2014 roughly \u20ac110 per month based on around 20 school days. In concertado and private schools, monthly lunch fees typically range from \u20ac150 to \u20ac200. Fees are billed monthly. A small number of children qualify for free school meals based on means-testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Final Note on the <\/strong>Comedor<\/em><\/strong> Culture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The comedor<\/em> isn’t just about food. Children are learning to eat together, try new things, and develop habits around mealtimes that will stay with them. For working parents, it’s also genuinely convenient \u2014 your child is fed, supervised, and settled for the afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s one of those things that sounds daunting before you arrive and becomes entirely unremarkable within a few weeks. Which, in my experience, is true of a lot of things about life in Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
