It stretches for miles along the coast and climbs steeply into the hills behind it, so the park, beach or playground your children can reach on foot depends entirely on which Málaga you mean. Add some of the tightest parking and driving restrictions of any Spanish city centre, and where you live shapes family life just as much as which school you choose, sometimes more so.

There are roughly 160 public and concertado (semi-private, state-subsidised) schools across the city, from guarderías (nurseries) through to bachillerato (the final two years of school), plus a smaller cluster of private international schools to the east and west. Before looking at neighbourhoods, a few very Málaga-specific questions will narrow things down faster than any map:

Will you have a car, or would you rather walk and use public transport? (If you’re planning on a car, be ready for Spain’s lengthy process for getting a licence.)

Are you comfortable with a school uniform?

Do you want your child to eat lunch at school, or would you rather collect them at midday?

Are you drawn to an IB-style, project-based way of learning, or a more traditional British or American approach?

And a small but useful one: most Málaga flats don’t come with a tumble dryer. Humidity often sits at 80 per cent or more, and with children’s laundry piling up, a load can take over a day to dry on the line in winter.

One honest note: almost every ‘good’ area in Málaga has a street or two that isn’t, and a school’s catchment can draw children from both. That’s normal city life, and unless a school has a poor reputation locally, it’s worth judging on its own merits rather than by postcode.

We’ve focused this article on the areas with the most for children: parks, beaches, safe places to ride a bike and things to do at the weekend. Neighbourhoods with little to offer young families have been left out. For each area, we also give a quick sense of the schools nearby. If you’re looking further along the coast, see our article on family-friendly towns on the Costa del Sol.

Tabla de contenidos

City Centre

The Centre & Soho

El Perchel (Sur & Norte)

East

El Limonar

Pedregalejo

El Candado

Rincón de la Victoria

Schools First, Then Neighbourhood

West & North of the Centre

Bailén-Miraflores

Ciudad Jardín

Carretera de Cádiz

Teatinos

Churriana

Campanillas & the Parque Tecnológico

Finding Your Place in Málaga

Preguntas frecuentes

About the Author

City Centre

Pros: near most of the museums, a beach and pier, and good transport links

Cons: nowhere to park, fewer green spaces

The Centre & Soho

The tree-lined pedestrian streets here are a gift for small legs and scooters, with no traffic to dodge (though locals will warn you the birds nesting in those trees are surprisingly loud). Rainy days are covered by some excellent museums and galleries, and sunny ones by Malagueta beach and Muelle Uno, the renovated pier with shops, restaurants and plenty of space to wander. The trade-off is that schools are scarce this close to the centre, and low-emission rules make driving and parking hard work, but buses run in every direction and the Cercanías train heads west to Fuengirola. Families who live here usually choose a school in a neighbouring area, or one of the private schools that run bus routes into the centre.

El Perchel (Sur & Norte)

Close to El Corte Inglés (a large Spanish department store selling everything from school shoes to sports kit, with a supermarket too) and near the train station, El Perchel is close to the centre without being in it. Perchel Sur, to the south, is safe, quiet and residential, but has almost no schools of its own, so think of it as ‘live here, school elsewhere’. Perchel Norte, to the north, is busier and more urban, and some of its smaller side streets are best avoided. It has more school choice than Perchel Sur, but mainly public and concertado. Its saving grace for families is Calle Huéscar, a large pedestrianised street where children can ride their bikes safely, with two parks close by. Also close by, the Jardines de Picasso, and the Larios and Vialia shopping centres for rainy afternoons.

East

Pros: close to the centre by bus or car, greener areas, small town feel

Cons: traffic can be rough during rush hours, summers can be extremely touristy

The east side is where the city opens up, with more green space and much more room to run around than the centre. It’s also home to several of the city’s private schools, so it’s a natural fit for families planning on private education.

El Limonar

One of Málaga’s most sought-after family neighbourhoods, with leafy streets and an upmarket feel. Its real draw for children is Parque del Morlaco, a lovely green space that fills with local families at weekends. Los Pinos de Limonar, next door, offers much the same on a slightly smaller scale. There are public, concertado and private schools in and around the neighbourhood.

Pedregalejo

Málaga’s classic seafront village-within-a-city: a promenade lined with chiringuitos (beach restaurants), perfect for an evening stroll or a bike ride, and a beach that local families actually use rather than just photograph. It’s one of the most popular family areas on the east side, which shows in demand and in prices. Local schools are mainly public and concertado, but a few private schools are within easy reach by car or school bus.

El Candado

Just past Pedregalejo, El Candado is smaller and calmer, with its own little beach and marina. If Pedregalejo’s promenade feels too busy on a summer Sunday, this is where to head with younger children. It has few schools of its own, so families here usually look to El Palo, Pedregalejo or the private schools a little further west.

Rincón de la Victoria

Just beyond the city limits to the east, Rincón de la Victoria is a separate town but works much like a seaside suburb of Málaga, and it’s very popular with young families. A long promenade and wide beaches run through La Cala del Moral and Torre de Benagalbón, ideal for bikes and scooters, and the Cueva del Tesoro, a cave right by the sea that you can visit, makes a good outing with children. Housing tends to be newer and roomier than in the eastern city neighbourhoods, often for less money. There’s a good spread of public and concertado schools, plus private options nearby with a car. There’s no train, so the commute into Málaga is by car or bus along the coast road, which slows down at rush hour. Out of season it stays a lived-in town rather than a resort.

Schools First, Then Neighbourhood

For most of the families we work with, the school ends up deciding the neighbourhood rather than the other way round. When you’re doing the school run twice a day, a short commute matters more than an extra bedroom, and a school that suits your child makes everything else easier.

That’s why we visit the schools we recommend in person, meeting the admissions teams, walking the classrooms and asking the questions that are hard to ask from abroad. In Málaga, that means knowing which schools run bus routes into which neighbourhoods, how places work when you arrive mid-year, and where a child with little or no Spanish will get proper support.

If you’d rather start with the school and work out the neighbourhood from there, book a free call and we’ll explain how we work and where to begin.

West & North of the Centre

Pros: more affordable, neighbourhoods can feel like small towns

Cons: primarily apartments, busy, built-up streets in the older parts

Bailén-Miraflores

This broad residential district just north-west of the centre, covering Suárez, Nueva Málaga and Las Chapas, lacks the name recognition of El Limonar or Pedregalejo, but it’s a practical choice for families who want space, don’t mind apartment living and want sensible prices close to town. Children are well served by lots of little parks and a skatepark, and El Corte Inglés and the centre are both within walking distance. There’s practically a frutería (greengrocer) on every street, too. As a long-established residential area, it has a few well-established public and concertado schools.

Ciudad Jardín

North of Bailén-Miraflores, at the foot of the hills, Ciudad Jardín is a quieter residential district with a mix of apartment blocks and older houses with small gardens. Its big draw for families is the Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción, a historic botanical garden with tropical woodland, ponds and walking trails that makes a lovely morning out with children of any age. Schools are mainly public and concertado, and the centre is a short bus ride away.

Carretera de Cádiz

This stretch along the coast road south-west of the centre covers La Luz, El Torcal, La Princesa, Los Tilos and Huelin. Huelin is the best known: a lively residential and shopping area with its own beach and a strong neighbourhood feel, popular with families who want to be near the sea. Head west along the beach to Playa de la Misericordia and the large Parque Oeste, where children can feed the ducks and turtles in the central lake with fresh lettuce or frozen peas. A little further on, La Térmica, a former power station turned cultural centre, hosts exhibitions and events right beside the big green Parque Litoral. It’s one of the most densely populated parts of the city, so there are plenty of public and concertado schools, and the international schools in Torremolinos and Benalmádena are within easy reach.

Teatinos

Inland from Carretera de Cádiz, Teatinos is one of the better-known names on this side of the city, largely thanks to the University of Málaga campus based there. It’s a newer, more purpose-built part of town, with wide streets, easier parking than the centre and a young, studenty energy in parts thanks to the university. For families, the big advantage is the metro: Line 1 runs from the university campus through Teatinos to the city centre, so older children can get around on their own. The newer blocks are spaced out with playgrounds and green areas between them. El Parque del Cine and La Laguna are typical areas for walking, running, playing ball and riding bikes. Many of the schools are relatively new public and concertado schools, built as the neighbourhood grew.

Churriana

Churriana marks the western edge of the city and feels unlike anywhere else on this list: it was its own town until 1905 and still has a village centre, church and market. For children, the highlight is the nearby Paraje Natural Desembocadura del Guadalhorce nature reserve, where you can go birdwatching and see flamingos resting on their migration route. Plaza Mayor, one of the city’s largest shopping and leisure centres, is on the doorstep for rainy days. It sits right by the airport and has a more rural, spread-out feel, which suits some families very well and others not at all. Schools are mainly local public and concertado, and the nearest private schools are a short drive.

Campanillas & the Parque Tecnológico

In the Guadalhorce valley north-west of the city, Campanillas is home to the Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía, also known as Málaga TechPark, where many relocating families have at least one parent working. Living nearby cuts out the drive across town, and the area mixes older village streets with newer developments that offer more space for less money than central Málaga. Day to day it’s fairly quiet and you’ll need a car, but the commute to the TechPark is short and the motorway links you quickly to the rest of the city. Schools are mainly public and concertado, but there are a few close private options.

Finding Your Place in Málaga

Choosing a neighbourhood and a school together is one of the biggest decisions in any move, and it’s much easier with someone on the ground. As Steps into Spain’s Málaga Partner, I visit schools across the city and the Costa del Sol, so I can tell you what a school is really like, not just what its website says. Private schools set their own rules, and many accept new pupils at any point in the year if they have space.

Which areas are most affordable for families?+

Within the city, Bailén-Miraflores, Carretera de Cádiz and Campanillas offer more space for the money than the east side.
