The reality depends not only on your child’s exact dietary requirements but also on whether they attend a public, concertado, or private school.

While many schools in Madrid cater well to allergies and medically certified dietary needs, the picture is far less consistent for cultural, religious, or lifestyle-based diets—such as vegetarianism or veganism.

When Schools Struggle to Adapt

This reality became glaringly clear when one of my clients, whose daughter is vegetarian for religious reasons, encountered serious obstacles.

The local public school’s comedor (canteen) could not provide an appropriate meal for her. In fact, the family’s request was considered outrageous and even “harmful” to her development. The only alternative offered was to present a medical certificate—which of course did not apply in this case.

As a result, the family now collects their daughter every day at lunchtime, takes her home to eat, and returns her to school by 2 p.m.—a logistical nightmare for working parents.

I personally contacted every public and concertado school in their neighbourhood to explore options. None could accommodate the family’s request without medical justification. Eventually, we found a private school willing to support a vegetarian diet. But even here, the experience was mixed—not all private schools in Madrid are prepared to offer vegetarian or vegan school meals either.

Allergies and Medical Needs: A Well-Established System

When it comes to allergies, schools in Madrid are much better equipped. My own child, who is coeliac, has always had their needs met, whether in a public, concertado, or private school.

Common allergies—such as lactose intolerance or fruit sensitivity—are routinely catered for. Many schools are already nut-free zones. With a medical certificate, schools create special menus and work with external catering companies whose staff are trained to manage risks.

This robust system is reassuring for parents of children with life-threatening allergies.

Special diets in schools in Madrid – Steps into Spain

The Vegetarian and Vegan Gap

When diets are cultural, religious, or lifestyle-based, the picture changes dramatically. Muslim families, for instance, can request pork-free or even halal meals. Yet vegetarian and vegan diets are rarely accommodated—especially in public and concertado schools.

One family I spoke to deliberately chose a school because it offered vegetarian options. Unfortunately, this remains the exception, not the rule.

The inconsistency likely stems from cultural attitudes. Spain is a country where meat, particularly pork, is deeply ingrained in daily meals. Vegetarianism and veganism, though increasingly popular worldwide, are still often perceived as niche or optional rather than essential.

And yet, with a growing international population and a global shift towards plant-based eating, it seems surprising that schools haven’t adapted. Even some private schools do not offer vegetarian or vegan menus, limiting options for families who prioritise them.

Why Can’t Vegetarian or Vegan Meals Be Standard?

Providing plant-based meals should not be difficult. Catering companies already adapt to medical allergies with precision. Adding vegetarian or vegan menus would not only be feasible but could simplify operations—offering a universal alternative that works for multiple restrictions.

Other countries, such as the UK, already provide vegetarian meals as standard in many schools, with vegan options becoming more common. Madrid could learn from these practices to create a more inclusive comedor system.

Where Private Schools Lead—But Not Always

Private schools in Madrid often have more flexibility with catering providers and can adapt menus more readily. Some do provide vegetarian and vegan school meals, but this is far from guaranteed. Parents must research each school carefully, as policies vary widely.

For families in public or concertado schools, the situation is more rigid: without a medical certificate, there is little leverage to demand change.

Moving Forward

Catering for special diets in Madrid schools highlights a wider need for inclusivity in education. It’s time for public, concertado, and private schools to take a more flexible approach.

Some steps forward could include:

Introducing vegetarian and vegan options as standard alternatives.

Training kitchen staff to prepare a wider variety of meals.

Recognising cultural and ethical needs alongside medical ones.

Conclusion

Catering for special diets in Madrid schools remains inconsistent. While allergies and medical needs are well covered, vegetarian and vegan families face significant challenges, even in private schools.

With Spain’s growing cultural diversity and the global rise of plant-based eating, it’s time for Madrid’s schools to catch up. After all, an inclusive comedor benefits everyone—and no child should feel excluded because of what’s on their plate.

Planning a move to Madrid and unsure where to start with schools?

There are different ways to get started, depending on whether you’re looking for information, personalised guidance, or full school search support.

Sinéad Galvin is the Founder of Steps into Spain, a boutique education consultancy based in Madrid.
