Yes, even for five-year-olds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just about eating. The comedor is part of the school day, part of the culture, and for many children, part of their education in manners, independence, and socialising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Spanish School Lunches Are Different<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Spanish timetable is built around a later lunch. Adults don\u2019t usually eat until 2 or 3pm, but school lunches in Spain tend to starts earlier \u2014 typically 1pm for infantil and primary, sometimes later for secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meals are cooked on-site in most public and concertado schools, though some private schools use external catering companies. Either way, the goal is to provide a hot, balanced meal every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s on the Menu?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Menus vary by school but school lunches in Spain follow a typical structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Starter<\/strong> \u2013 usually a vegetable-based soup, salad, or legumes (lentils, chickpeas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Main<\/strong> \u2013 meat, fish, or egg dish with a side of vegetables or potatoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dessert<\/strong> \u2013 fruit, yoghurt, or occasionally a sweet treat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bread and water are always included.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Menus are posted monthly on <a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/sineadgalvin\/Downloads\/MENU-JUNIO-25-CEIP-GUINDALERA-BASAL-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school website<\/a> \u2014 some even include dinner suggestions so you can balance meals at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Comedor Routine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Children eat with their classmates, often supervised by <strong>monitores<\/strong> (lunchroom supervisors), who are responsible for helping younger children cut food, encouraging them to eat, and managing behaviour. Teachers usually have lunch separately, though in some smaller schools, they may also supervise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eating in the comedor teaches children to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sit at a table for a full meal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use cutlery properly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try a variety of foods (even if they don\u2019t like them at first).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes \u2014 there\u2019s a <em>no packed lunch<\/em> policy in most public and concertado schools. If your child stays at school for lunch, they eat the school meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Special Diets and Allergies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child has allergies, intolerances, or religious dietary needs, schools can usually accommodate this \u2014 but you must notify them in writing and provide medical or official documentation. Some will require a doctor\u2019s certificate; others accept a signed statement from parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From gluten-free to vegetarian, schools in Spain are generally used to adapting menus, but always confirm arrangements with the comedor coordinator before term starts. If you\u2019re used to an 11:30 or 12pm lunch, a 1pm start can feel late, especially for younger children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shift your home schedule gradually in August<\/strong> so the school lunch slot feels natural.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer a mid-morning snack at home on weekends to bridge the gap.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep after-school snacks light so they\u2019ll eat dinner later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, in Spain, dinner is often at 8pm or later \u2014 so school lunch plays a big role in keeping kids going through the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What If Your Child Doesn\u2019t Like the Food?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the top concerns I hear from parents. The reality? Most children adjust. Peer influence is powerful \u2014 they see classmates eating lentil stew and often give it a try. That said, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Review the menu together and talk about new foods in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage \u201cjust a taste\u201d at home of unfamiliar ingredients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trust that tastes expand over time \u2014 it\u2019s part of the cultural experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some schools will let you collect your child for lunch if they\u2019re not enrolled in comedor, but for working parents, this isn\u2019t practical. In most cases, I recommend at least trying school lunch for the first term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Social Side of School Lunch<\/strong> in Spain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The comedor isn\u2019t just about nutrition \u2014 it\u2019s a social classroom. Children chat, laugh, and learn the rhythms of a shared meal. For international students, it\u2019s also a daily Spanish immersion session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t underestimate the independence it builds.
